The Recordings of Blues Legend Robert Johnson

As a blues loving Texan, I’m proud to say that Robert Johnson made his historic recordings here. On November 23rd, 1936, he began the recordings in San Antonio, at the Gunter Hotel, in room 414.  He also recorded there November 27 and 28, 1936.  The Gunter Hotel, after a few name changes, is back to the Gunter Hotel, and they have named a club the 414 bar.  (311 N St Mary’s St, San Antonio, TX 78205, they also have an entrance at 205 East Houston)  You can see an older photo of the hotel if you scroll down at their website, thegunterhotel.com

Robert Johnson made his other recordings in Dallas, Saturday and Sunday, June 19 and 20, 1937.  It was in a Warner Brothers building (at the time) at 508 Park Avenue.

Sadly, there were only these two recording sessions of Robert Johnson’s music.  And there are only two known photographs of him.  At one time, someone thought they found a third photo, but it was later determined it wasn’t him.
